The Classic Half Updo
This is the most common and the basic half updo. Sprig some shine hairspray on damp hair. Create a half ponytail by pulling back the top portion of your hair. Coil it, and secure it with a clear band. This will be particularly flattering for a face with a strong jaw line as the below section of hair will cover up the big jaws.Pinning some of it up allows you to keep some length around your face, but still have the structure of having it pinned, which helps keep the body and shape in place. But, if you have a different face shape, you can still go for this, no matter what.
Softly Pinned Half Updo
This is also more like the Classic Up do, but going for curls will be a better option. Curls should be pinned softly, with little definition, giving the hair a nice shape that still flows as if it were all down. Curl your hair with a 1 ½ inch curling iron, adding spray wax for more texture. Softly twist and pin your hair around your ear level. Pin the bobby pins, pushing them up a little bit so that the pinned hair gets a little more volume. Use a hairspray if your hair is too silky to hold the pins tight onto the hair. This updo will be perfect for any face shape and any hair type.
For this style, too, you will have to curl the hair, but only the ends. Use a large curling iron or a flat iron for this purpose. Grab a small portion of hair and pin it. Start this from the crown of your head. Pin a few more pieces like this all through the crown to create a nice shape. Wrap the hair on the left over to the right as you move down the side. Repeat this vice versa, pinning each side wrapped across the other side. Take 2-3 sections for each side. Best Face Shape for this is round or oval shaped faces. Medium to thick hair with layers will also work well with this look.
Using a comb, backcomb the base of your hair at the crown. When you’re done Smooth down the top section of your hair. Grab hair from each side of the ears and make it into a half ponytail. Secure with a clear elastic.
Here are a few styles that you can do with a half up and half down updo. You can also try cascading curls, slicking back the sides, half way braid, twisting back one side, a fancy braid, going low in the back or a triple headband braid half updo with a bump and long curls. For a better and easier choice give yourself a “mood board” or other collage where you can put all the prom elements together with your hair.
